during the dust bowl depression era my folks gathered the tumbleweeds(Russian Thistle)that stuck to the fences and used it for forage once they noticed the cattle that survived ate it. granted there wasn't much else to eat but dust which would catch on the barbed wire fences and build up so high the cattle could walk over the dust covered fence. using bagasse would keep a herd from perishing just like the tumbleweeds.
