Putin is not fighting for only the Russian-speaking people of Ukraine. Nor is he fighting just for the Crimea. He wants it all, because that's how he, like pretty much all authoritarian rulers, is. Does what language Ukrainians speak matter? I don't really think so. Zelenskyy is a native Russian speaker. So are a great many others who don't feel as if they're Russian. I'm sure you remember what Tolstoy said about families.
And you're not examining all the sometime-combatants in Southern Ukraine. What about the Light Brigade? Into the Valley of Death rode the 600, which seems to me pretty stupid, but that's how things were done then. And there were also the Ottomans, whose involvement at least made more sense.
So tonight everyone is feeling happy and hopeful about Israel and Gaza, and I wish them--every side--all the best. But problems that have existed for thousands of years are unlikely to be resolved quickly.
