OpenAPI claims to want 250 mw of capacity by 2033. I posted this bit below on substack about what that means. The planned spending levels suggest a lot of delusion funded by debt.-------------------Check my math but
at 0.05 kw hour which is cheap I get
$50 a megawatt hour
$50,000 a gigawatt hour
So 250 gw is about a 12 million dollar an hour electric bill
which is about 300 million a day
10 billion a month
120 billion dollars a year.
Round that up to a more reasonable kw hour price given the demand increase and 200 billion annual seems about right just for electricity.
Microsoft who owns a piece of openai has annual revenue of 280 billion. You would need all 8 billion humans on earth to pay $20 a month just to cover OpenAPI’s electric bill to say nothing about other very expensive costs like endless fields of GPU’s. Now if thats capacity not use its probably more like half that, but still we are talking like 100 billion a year just for electricity.
I got some chatgpt help on this next part but that translates to about 140 million blackwell gpus with an all in hardware cost of about 100k each at a very conservative estimate. I get another 14 trillion in hardware costs.
These are amazing technologies but I feel somebody failed to run their plans through a spreadsheet.
