DTREF - info in last week In the past week, several developments related to rare earth elements (REE) mining in the USA have been reported:
•  Morgan Stanley Upgrades MP Materials: Morgan Stanley highlighted MP Materials, which operates the only active REE mine in the U.S. at Mountain Pass, California, as a top pick due to its vertical integration and strategic importance amid U.S.-China trade tensions. This follows China’s export restrictions on seven REEs in April 2025, prompting increased focus on domestic supply chains.
•  New REE Mine Exploration: Posts on X mentioned a second potential REE mine in the U.S., referred to as DTREF, with exploration updates expected this week. While not yet operational, it signals growing interest in expanding U.S. REE mining capacity.
•  Investment in REE Refining: American Resources Corporation secured a $150 million investment to expand its REE refining capabilities, highlighting efforts to bolster domestic processing, which is currently limited compared to China’s 90% control of global REE processing.
•  Supply Chain Concerns: China’s slow approval of REE export licenses continues to disrupt U.S. industries, including auto and defense sectors. This has heightened the urgency to develop domestic REE sources, though full self-sufficiency is projected to be years away, with refining capabilities possibly online by 2027-2030.
•  Research Advancements: The National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) developed a new process to extract REEs from coal fly ash, offering a potential alternative source to traditional mining, which could enhance U.S. supply resilience.
These updates reflect ongoing efforts to reduce U.S. dependence on Chinese REEs, driven by geopolitical tensions and trade restrictions, though significant challenges remain in scaling up domestic production and processing.
