My gas bill at the highest in winter is around 300 bucks. So if if the bill is 299.97 and they round up to 300., I can live with 33 cents extra a year. But think about if they have 10 million customers so that 30 cents just jumped to an extra 3 million a year. That's if you think along those weird lines like I sometimes do, correctly or incorrectly whatever. wait, that might be 30 million a year... math obviously isn't my forte`.

Remember the Anthony dollar, almost the exact size of the quarter. That may have not been a wonderful commemorative selfless effort at remembering someone, but more the vending machines and suppliers wanting to get rid of the costs of handling dollar/5 bills and save money on paper tray maintenance as well. A big cost savings to that industry and a stop gap to digital bank card POS at machines. It didn't go over probably because I can carry 10 singles a lot more comfortably and inconspicuously in my pocket than a roll of quarters, along with so many people collecting them anyways and taking them out of circulation. People like to collect and collectors... collect.

I was helping a neighbor build a greenhouse, homemade, that needed hundreds of washers.  The washers are 9 cents a piece at the hardware store.  So we drilled holes in pennies with a drill press that the screws fit into.   So we only spent a penny a piece for washers made of pennies.  Probably not legal, but very cost effective.
