MIKJ: >>"You're right that "serious" criminals would find a way to get guns. You're also right that stricter enforcement is needed, also. The thing is, according to the study, crime DID drop when these steps (licensing, registration) were taken. The interesting point was that the crime rate was lowest in "states who were surrounded by others who had the same laws". That indicates to me, that if these steps were taken nationally, that guns would be even harder to get."<<
And if you look at the stats of the states that have extpedited the right to carry concealed you will also notice a significant decrease in crime. The issue is more about keeping guns out of the wrong hands rather than denying law abiding citizens the right to keep and bear arms. I'm pro background check, pro waiting period, pro registration and pro safety courses prior to issuing a concealed permit. I think the root of the NRA's complaint is that if we allow the fed govt. to start denying or taking away our rights as citizens, where does it stop? I'm not an NRA member and I don't intend to be applying for any hunting licenses. I'll leave the killing for the thrill or just to weed out the herd to those who find some kind of morbid satisfaction in that endeavor. As far as the killing to put food on the table philosophy goes, thats ludicrous, as there are not enough hunting seasons or permits to fill the larders. Besides I'd much rather be out on the lake with a cold Corona, in pursuit of the one that got away.<g>
