I don't think it's about the money by that point. Its about having nothing else to do after, and knowing there's no going back. Explain why Tom Brady came back? Or why Willie Mays didn't know when to retire...or Babe Ruth for that matter?
Getting old sucks and admitting you can't do something any more and quitting takes.....I dunno....courage?
How many athletes retire on top? Jim Brown? Barry Sanders? I can't think of any baseball players....Thurman Munson?

And you don't think Kershaw is a HOFer by todays standards already?? I think he's definitely first year.

Kershaw is allready a first ballot hof in my opinion, he doesn't need the strikeouts, but I'm gathering he wants to strikeout 32 more, so he can say he has 3000 in his career to be fair I understand why anyone would want that in his position. if CC is a first ballot hof (which I agreed with), kershaw better be, I like CC and thought he was a first ballot hof, but kershaw was better. Kershaw to me is more like Ichiro it should be close to 100% in my opinion, not that the % matters as long as it is over 75%.
