Fort Ticonderoga is the Northern End, Fort William Henry is the southern end. It's a beautiful lake, and 40 years after I left its still beautiful.

When I was a kid and through most of my teens, we used to vacation on South Hero, an island at the northern tip of Lake Champlain. We lived in the Philly suburbs when we began going there, and would leave late on Friday, spend the night on the way, and then finish the trip Saturday morning.

It was, of course, the 1950s. The Garden State Parkway already existed, and we'd take that to the northern border of the state. But in the early years, the New York Thruway didn't continue north, so we used local roads. Between about 1956 and 1960, we'd stop for the night at Lake George. I visited Fort William Henry and Fort Ticonderoga--and I think some other tourist sites--several times.

Then in 1960, my family moved to northwestern Indiana, and we took a different route to Vermont.
