You may recall that for a very long term, some push button phones had a toggle switch that would allow the owner to select dial-tone or pulse. In the pulse position the phone would generate the pulse noises that simulated those from a rotary phone.
lol, I have NO idea! I left the States for Italy in late 1978. At that time, I had a rotary dial only phone.
