It doesn't mean "the trauma of war is easily forgotten."
I spent the summer of 1969 in Germany, doing a summer job. I got to know a number of twentysomething Germans. To my astonishment, all of them firmly believed West and East Germany, then separate countries would one day be reunited. I thought that was crazy.
But they were right.
