Well, your son's friends are not necessarily representative. Did you ever read the WallStreet Bets board at Reddit? Those people were were either manipulators or idiots.
Not all index funds are created equal..and many frown on the ownership of such. Too many fail to pay attention to the reality of what is going on and just rely on others(the index). If you don't pay attention to said fund in relation to what is.....you are going to get fkd' on a downside run.
"Never be lazy" is what should be drilled into our kids.... et al.
