The Libre 3 sensor is a major improvement over the Libre 2. The biggest change is constant monitoring without wearer intervention. Also it's smaller, the applicator is more straight forward to use and the sensor is easier to remove at the end of its cycle. The upcoming change from 14 days to 15 days may not seem like much but insurance only approves two sensors a month which means wearers must purchase two sensors outside insurance each year or forego use 2-3 days a month. Cost is $75 per unit for either the Libre 2 or 3. Insurance only covers 1/2 the cost currently so Abbott will have to work with insurers and Medicare to increase coverage or they'll have to lower their price if they want folks in the bottom economic quartile as customers.
While they are generally excellent devices, Abbott still occasionally ships a device that does not read correctly. An AID system could prove to be quite problematic in this case. Hospitals are only now beginning to use CGM devices. That should also be an excellent market for Abbott as use becomes standard protocol.
