Law firms in NY get about 1/3 (33.3%) minus their direct costs, as I recall. Often they say up to 40%. Costs could be considerable. So your estimate is not a bad assumption. The larger the settlement, the smaller the costs are as a percentage.

Good point; 30% is more the norm. And I’m still not convinced this isn’t more of a hybrid arrangement of contingency fee plus billable hours.
