Ya it sure is strange that there were billions of shares traded in early years on a smaller float. Where did those shares come from?

Naked shorts don't get margin calls? So you mean I can naked short a stock and the price can move against my baseline infinitely and there are no consequences for me? I might have to take up naked shorting, sounds awesome! But how exactly does a price rise effect a naked short? Surely there has to be some cons.
