The subtext for your 'working families are struggling.....It's only gotten worse since 2008' is, to me, that both Parties are equally culpable. Usually it's more explicit.
Since '08 the Dems have occupied the WH 10 of the 14 years, sometimes with Senate and House majorities and sometimes not. The Dems came in on the heels of two recessions.
The Great Recession and the Covid mini-recession both necessitated government stimulus, both by the Fed and by the Fed gov in the form of extended SNAP and unemployment benefits and, more recently, economic impact payments, 3 of them, from the IRS.
There is no 'boot strap' remedy when jobs go away. And yet most economic recovery measures are opposed by most Republican politicians most of the time, despite the fact that more of their constituents are adversely affected. Call it a combo of concerns about the 'moral hazards' of helping the poor or the usual trickle down economics of deficit exploding tax cuts.
But there they usually are wagging their disapproving fingers at mostly their own constituents, instead of trying to help them out.
