She had a short time as an elected politician, her professional life has been as a highly respected and active doctor. She would have been appointed to a couple of positions in her career, i guess. It's easy to see how she could be misunderstood and misrepresented.
Kerryn Lyndel Phelps AM (born 14 December 1957) is an Australian medical practitioner, public health and civil rights advocate, medical educator and former politician. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kerryn_Phelps
All she is saying is that one, some people do have adverse reaction to vaccines and that pressure has been put on some doctors not to be critical of government vaccine policy. Nothing surprising in that. Unfortunately some government people do put pressure on some of those who are making valid and inspiring criticisms of government policy even when the policy is the correct one at the time.
Two she is saying that some negative effects of vaccine are real and that some health authorities have not been as open to accepting that as they should be.
Three she is saying there are real problems with long term covid and not enough research yet is being done on it.
Something like that. ;-)
She has always been a strong supporter of vaccines. And in voicing her criticisms now is not in any way taking away from the success of vaccines, nor from the continuing value of them.
"seems like a weird position to take. Is she an elected official or appointed? P - I know people who have lost family members and even personal acquaintances from the covid, all unvaccinated. Nobody I've ever heard of that suddenly had health issues from getting the shot(s). I've had five shots and I feel no different. I'm ready to start toning it down though. I had a rougher time with my shingles vaccine than I did with the covid ones but I won't break out in suffering skin rash anytime soon. P - I'm still procrastinating over the flu shot. Never had one and I'm mostly outdoors nowadays, so unless the chimps have it, I think I'm OK."
I'm lucky, haven't heard from anyone with friends or family who have died from covid. At your age i don't think i was having flu shots either. Must have had them as a child then stopped cuz like you it had never bothered me. Think i started them regularly less than 10 years ago. Maybe only five.
No doubt she would know anti-vaxxers will use and abuse her concerns to aid their ignorant ends, and has decided that is just part of the deal.
