The guys on the fireline are in for longer sentences, years. It makes it more cost effective to train them in the job, as it is not an instant procedure. They are non-violent offenders, usually drug related and many are multiple DUI guys that get a couple years in the slammer or that were in a wreck that hurt or killed someone. Many are extremely skilled at making pruno while in fire camp since they miss their drug of choice and take a lot of risks to get shit hammered.
The tv show Fire Country features a bunch of Calfire guys and some regular Calfire slugs, which most actual fire guys chuckle at but they keep it engaging.
