I don't think you're alone, in not understanding how/why it does/doesn't move the SP. I don't think it's been adequately explained, although it's not anyone's job in particular to explain it to us.

It's as if there's a secondary market, in which the buyers (or their MM's, or minions) are left alone to collect shares throughout the day and then post the amount after hours. They could possibly be buying shares in a spread and therefore it shouldn't have an effect upon the SP, per se.

(Kind of like, we have to buy these shares so leave us alone to collect within our posted spread)

Purely conjecture on my part.

Dark pool trades are a way for institutions and fund managers to get the shares they need without tipping their hands to anyone that would run the SP up or down depending on what the institutions/funds are looking to do (buy/sell). Basically trades there happen in a bubble that leaves the SP alone. They get what they want and we have to wait for the increase and as long as we hold tight to our shares we WILL get the increase the institutions and funds are after too
