More accurately, he spoke to their Id, to their 'common sense' that was neither common nor sense. He gave them 'permission', through his horrible words and actions, to voice their bigotries, resentments and grievances. Permission as well to not accept the results of an election.
If the reports from sources at the time were true, and bush turned left to take out saddam instead of right away with osama because saddam was threatening his father, then the response was the same personal self interest selfish reasoning as frumpt.
