If you take a look at Mao's cultural revolution, you will see many of the same phenomenon occurring now. The safe spaces at colleges. The speech policing online. The statues coming down.
WTF?? That is NOT what happened. The Cultural Revolution had the Red Guards in the streets, railing against expertise and education. The actual experts were sent out to the country, to work in "reeducation" camps.
It was all rather like the people today who think they know more than epidemiologists. Or the crazy women who believe it's okay to harass mothers walking their kids home from school screaming that they're "abusing" the children by encouraging them to wear masks.
You don't actually remember anything about the Cultural Revolution, obviously.
