For me Merkel's taking in a million Syrian refugees made clear her vast deep sense of humanity. That empathetic act will fix her place in my memory. Also it's sweet to see the far-right's overly triumphant rush of blood cut short in Germany's election. The election of their first center-left government in 16 years is a positive sign.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz and his new cabinet were sworn in, beginning a new chapter for Europe’s largest democracy. Angela Merkel wished him well and called the chancellorship “one of the most beautiful duties there are.”
