For me Merkel's taking in a million Syrian refugees made clear her vast deep sense of humanity. That empathetic
act will fix her place in my memory. Ok, why not, after that thought just picked up, so why not slip it in here too.

Also it's sweet to see the far-right's overly triumphant rush of blood cut short in Germany's
election. The election of their first center-left government in 16 years is a positive sign.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz and his new cabinet were sworn in, beginning a new chapter for Europe’s largest democracy. Angela Merkel wished him well and called the chancellorship “one of the most beautiful duties there are.”
