Standard deviations are related directly to Gaussian probability distributions

I understand this, but not all Gaussian are the same.

Some have fat tails some are you standard "normal bell shaped" or thin tailed.

SD's are not "related directly to Gaussian probability distributions". Every distribution, normal (aka Gaussian) or not, has an SD.
