a big fund could be loading and or some dark pool trading where a market maker keeps the price in a tight range for some REALLY BIG MONEY TO LOAD UP
I called the SEC a long time ago to ask how can market makers drop a price over 50% and hold it in a tight range for hours, days or even weeks.
they never gave me a good answer.
perhaps HF algos are just trading it back and forth.
i had called another time about a stock after they reported earnings. the stock gapped up $1.50 in pre-market then was walked down for 2 hours to below the $1.50 gap up, then it proceeded to drop another 5% and then was held within a 3 cent trading range for 4 hours!!!
I called during market hours and stated what I saw, they said, we'll make a note of it, never heard back or received any kind of response during the phone call either
