The author missed the fact that much of the interior west desert country has extremely low humidities when it gets hot, so evaporative cooling is quite effective. (think wet bulb/dry bulb differential)

It doesn't take much more energy than a fan, and works fine for my 120 year old farmhouse (retro insulated 15 years ago). The last few days, it gets upper 90's but it drops to the high 40's at night, so just opening up the house in the evening means it will be chilly in the house by morning. Opening the house up is only a problem when the smoke gets too thick.

Sydney experiences coldest start to winter in 30 years while parts of northern Australia swelter

As Australia’s south-east endures a particularly chilly start to winter, the north of the country is sweltering through near record high June temperatures.

In the first week of winter, most south-eastern cities experienced colder than usual temperatures coupled strong winds, with residents rugging up to face the crisp weather.

Weatherzone meteorologist Ben Domensino said the cold snap was unusual this early into the season.

Why the collapse of an Atlantic ocean current could mean La Niña becomes the norm

“It has been an unusually cold start to winter for south-eastern Australia, including Tasmania, Victoria and New South Wales and southern Queensland. That’s due to a series of cold fronts that have moved out into the south-east of the country during the first week of June.”

Excerpt from extra article in above

Climate change is slowing down the conveyor belt of ocean currents that brings warm water from the tropics up to the north Atlantic. Our research .. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41558-022-01380-y , published today in Nature Climate Change, looks at the profound consequences to global climate if this Atlantic conveyor collapses entirely.

We found the collapse of this system – called the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation – would shift the Earth’s climate to a more La Niña-like state. This would mean more flooding rains over eastern Australia and worse droughts and bushfire seasons over south-west US.

East-coast Australians know what unrelenting La Niña feels like. Climate change has loaded our atmosphere with moister air, while two summers of La Niña warmed the ocean north of Australia. Both contributed to some of the wettest conditions ever experienced, with record-breaking floods in New South Wales and Queensland.

Arctic surge brings rare and unusual weather to Chicago area
By Tim McGill Published January 6, 2022
Tim's Weather Takeaways
FOX 32 Chicago

Chicago - Arctic air came crashing in Wednesday on gusty winds. The coldest air mass of the season to descend upon us was accompanied by winds gusting between 40 to 50 mph.

The National Weather Service issued a rare "snow squall warning" for portions of Will County in Illinois along with parts of Lake and Porter counties in Indiana. A snow squall is defined as "an intense short-lived burst of heavy snowfall that leads to a quick reduction in visibilities and is often accompanied by gusty winds".

Climate Change Causing Extreme Weather Patterns in Chicagoland: Expert
By Chris Coffey • Published December 16, 2021 • Updated on December 16, 2021 at 7:54 pm
[...]
Scott Collis, an atmospheric scientist with Argonne National Laboratory, said rising global temperatures and the loss of Arctic sea ice is buckling the jet stream.

The jet stream is a set of winds that sits about half-way up in the Earth's atmosphere at about 30,000 feet, with the winds directly impacting our weather patterns.

“When you have a jet stream that doesn’t move, you get hit by the same kind of weather system again and again and again,” Collis said.

According to Collis, climate change is causing more extreme weather patterns.

“Not every event I see is directly attributable to climate change, but climate change loads the dice,” Collis said. “It’s not necessarily that we’re going to get severe storms every day. We’re just gonna get more severe storms and more of this extreme weather that we’re seeing.”

Collis said the world has warmed about 1.1 degrees Celsius in recent years. He said if global temperatures stay within 1.5 degrees Celsius, the Chicago area could see more rain, windier winters and falls, less windy summers and a general increase in temperature.
