Years ago our beloved 13-yr old lab/golden mix was approaching his end and beginning to suffer. We took him to the vet for a consult and were advised by one clinician to have costly ($0,000s), risky, painful throat surgery. We then sought another's advice, telling him what the other vet was pushing. He shook his head, gave us a few pills that had a long shot of working and said 'if he doesn't improve in a day or two I'd advise you to have him...'
You know how the story ends. He was a great dog, but still, a dog.
