Coinbase leads $6M funding for Indonesian crypto exchange

Pintu is a new cryptocurrency exchange in Indonesia, licensed as a crypto broker under Bappebti and the Ministry of Communication and Informatics.

Pintu, an Indonesia-based cryptocurrency exchange focusing on first-time crypto users, has raised $6 million to support its mission to drive industry adoption.

The company announced Tuesday that it has completed a Series A funding round led by major global crypto investors including Pantera Capital, Coinbase Ventures, and Intudo Ventures, tech news agency Tech in Asia reports. Other inventors like Alameda Ventures, Blockchain Ventures, and Castle Island Ventures also participated in the round.

Founded in 2020 by Jeth Soetoyo, Pintu is a major licensed cryptocurrency company in Indonesia, regulated by the Indonesian Commodity Futures Trading Regulatory Agency, or Bappepti. The exchange is registered under Bappebti and the Ministry of Communication and Informatics as a licensed crypto broker.

The company’s new funding will be turned into marketing, hiring and product development to attract more newcomers to the industry. Pintu chief operating officer Andrew Adjiputro reportedly noted that Pintu is a bit different from major Indonesian crypto exchanges like Indodax and Tokocrypto as Pintu is focused on the mass market to reach mainly first-time crypto users.

Adjiputro said that many Indonesian retail traders view crypto as an alternative investment asset class, with most of the investors being aged between 20 and 35 years old.

“For most Indonesians, the concept of investing and trading is new, because historically penetration in these categories have been so low. So what we’re seeing is also the opportunity to help Indonesians understand the concept of investing/trading and along the way leapfrog investments into other asset classes,” the COO stated.

As previously reported, Indonesia has been keeping cryptocurrency trading legal despite putting a blanket ban on crypto payments back in 2017. Yesterday, the country’s central bank reportedly announced state digital currency plans, intending to make a digital rupiah currency a legal payment instrument in Indonesia.

Coinbase users can now buy crypto with Apple Pay

Coinbase has added additional user-friendly payment options to its platform.

Crypto exchange Coinbase announced on Thursday that users can now use Apple Pay to purchase crypto assets on its platform, with Google Pay integration to follow.

“Today we’re introducing new and seamless ways to enable crypto buys with linked debit cards to Apple Pay and Google Pay, and instant cashouts up to $100,000 per transaction available 24/7,” said a Coinbase blog post on Thursday.

“If you already have a Visa or Mastercard debit card linked in your Apple Wallet, Apple Pay will automatically appear as a payment method when you’re buying crypto with Coinbase on an Apple Pay-supported iOS device or Safari web browser,” the Coinbase blog post mentioned.

Coinbase expects to enable Google Pay functionality “later this fall.”

In the same post, Coinbase announced “instant cashouts via Real Time Payments (RTP), enabling customers in the U.S. with linked bank accounts to instantly and securely cash out up to $100,000 per transaction.”

Digital asset exchange Gemini made a similar move back in April, integrating Google Pay and Apple Pay cash transfer options on its platform.

This story is developing and will be updated.

Walmart seeks crypto product lead to drive digital currency strategy
Walmart’s future digital currency and crypto product lead will be based in the company’s home office in Bentonville, Arkansas.

North American retail giant Walmart is looking for an experienced crypto expert who can develop and drive an ambitious digital currency strategy and product roadmap.

In the listing for the role, Walmart indicates it is looking for someone who has a track record in leading and scaling businesses, with at least 10 years of experience in product/program management and technology-based product commercialization. The ideal candidate should have expertise in cryptocurrencies and blockchain-related technologies and in-depth knowledge of the crypto ecosystem and its core actors.

Walmart has hinted at the focus of its future digital currency strategy by noting that it already enables a “broad set of payment options for its customers” — although not yet in cryptocurrency. Back in 2019, Walmart had already filed a patent for a blockchain-based United States dollar-backed digital currency that was, at the time, similar to Facebook’s early proposals for what was then known as Libra.

This year, Walmart created a fintech venture called “Hazel,” which could reportedly be poised to offer a wide range of financial services integrated into a “mobile-first ‘super-app.‘”

Walmart’s future Digital Currency and Crypto Product Lead will be based in the company’s home office in Bentonville, Arkansas. In addition to developing and driving an overall crypto strategy, their key tasks will be to involve identifying customer needs and translating them into product requirements; forging partnerships with product, technology and design leaders; committing to a crypto product roadmap and driving the project’s execution; and identifying crypto-related investment opportunities and partnerships.

Among North American megafirms, Walmart is not alone in seeking to integrate digital currency into its e-commerce and wider business strategy. This February, Amazon posted a job listing for a leader to oversee a new digital currency service in Mexico that would allow users to spend digital currency while shopping.

In addition to its slow foray into digital currency proper, Walmart’s blockchain-related projects have to date centered on using the technology for applications that include supply chain management, customer marketplaces and smart appliances.
