"Did your Turinese brother-in-law ever give you any truffles?"
He's a friend of the Marchese family, who own one of the better vineyards producing Barolo and Barbera wines.
When I was courting my current wife, (so before he was my brother-in-law and just someone who was very protective of his wife's twin sister) he arranged for a private tour of the Marchese cellars and vineyard, followed by a seven course lunch, each course accompanied by appropriate wines.
Before we sat down, the chef presented a large handful of truffles for us to smell and marvel at.
One of the courses was those truffles cooked gently in eggs. Nothing else.
It was sublime.
And the whole thing was one of my most treasured gastronomic, romantic and frankly sybaritic experiences ever. My wife and I remember it very fondly indeed.
I adore truffles.
And baked bean and beef lasagne.
