The issue with GME was that over 100% of the float was actually short. I'm not even sure how that happens unless they were naked shorting.

A lot of shorts won't touch anything if the float is over 30% for the very reason of what is happening now.

You always have to short on margin, so there's no chance of "riding it out" . If you lose 10x your original investment...you're getting a margin call
