#60469 RE: Photonics_Guy #60465

Hey Photonics_guy, I have a great contact through my LinkedIn of someone who is working in the field. I asked him what his thoughts are on the Intel's Labs Day 2020 video. Especially why the wording on the micro-ring modulator was different.
I told him a fellowshareholder noticed that the photodetector is called "All-Silicon" but the micro-ring modulator is not.
It's called "Silicon Micro-ring modulator".
Why is there a difference in wording?

His reply:

1) Silicon micro-ring resonators:

It is not clear if Intel is one of the first companies to productize a technology that has been in the research phase for nearly 20years (due to the difficulty in repeating the tough fabrication designs). HP have fabricated and designed silicon ring resonators over 10years ago, however it is not clear if HP productized their designs. It is also not clear of the speed and overall performance of their micro-ring silicon modulator design compared to other modulator solutions. They show PAM4 to get 112Gbps (which is ~66Gbps NRZ, and an analog bandwidth around ~50GHz). The industry needs analog bandwidths of 70GHz +

2) All silicon photodetectors:

The key message that Intel is saying is that their photodetectors do not utilize Germanium or Indium Phosphide for the increased wavelengths (1310nm) that most silicon companies use to extend the photodetector bandwidth range. Intel says they are doing this by using a silicon micro-ring resonator design.
