Science will tell you it is the former and not the latter. I used to call my son a bird brain until I went to the Museum of Natural History in NY with him and discovered that birds weren't stupid. Neither was he BTW that was a joke.
Creationism was a means to come up with fake science so they could justify a religious belief that should be taught in schools.
Evolution tells you something different so it is up to you to determine what is correct. To date evolution in my mind wins and the religious BS loses.
As to where we are going that remains an unanswered question.
The question you are posing is what happens after death?
I would like to think there is something else. But that is my own subjective view.
