I think if you study US business history PRIOR to the creation of the Federal Reserve, the Sherman Anti-trust Act, the creation of the SEC, and other governmental "interference" with the free markets, you will see deeper troughs and higher peaks than what we have now.

Didn't JP Morgan in essence take on the role of lender of last resort prior to the creation of the Federal Reserve?
