The Mt. Washington organizers can talk all they want about their race being the #1 premier hillclimb ... but it ain't. That title belongs to the Mt. Evans Hillclimb (now called the Bob Cook Memorial Mt. Evans Hillclimb). http://www.bicyclerace.com
The race runs from near the Coors brewery in Golden, CO to the top of Mt. Evans (14,264). Winners have included names like Alexi Grewal, Ned Overend, Mike Engleman, Jonathon Vaughters, Scott Moninger (the 2nd winningest US pro cyclist in history after Davis Phinney), and Tom Danielson, who set the course record in 2004.
I've ridden the Mt. Evans course and it's an amazing climb. (6,920 ft of climbing over 27 miles). Mt. Washington is much steeper (more than double the average gradient), but much shorter too (4,720 ft of climbing over 7.6 miles), finishing in half the time. Altitude, which is a major issue in the rarified air on the way up the final miles of Mt. Evans, isn't anywhere near the same on the Mt. Washington, which is relatively puny at a bit more than 6,000 ft. (compared to Mt. Evans at 14,000+ ft).
BTW, how much of a freak is Ned Overend? The guy finished 2nd behind Tyler Hamilton at Mt. Washington this year, only 2 minutes down (the 3rd place finisher was 8 minutes down), and he did this drug-free at the age of ...... 51 (no, not a misprint, fifty-one!). Heh, there's a reason the guy's nickname was "The Lung".
