Yep, get the wrong day, and that can be literally un-doable. Sections of that climb are already at the limit of what's reasonable -- prolonged stretches of 18+% -- not to mention the finishing stretch at 22% (absurd). So if you get a big blow, it's all she wrote. Not even Lance Armstrong can turn a gear up an 18% grade into a 40 MPH wind.
As for me, I have no interest in Mt. Washington. They made their bed with Tyler Hamilton and disgraced themselves on that account. I'm with the thousands of amateurs that either walked from the race that year, or decided they'd never go there.
Besides, no offense to New Hampshire, but I've been to Mt. Washington and I've been to Leadville, and the nicest way I can say it is ... Mt. Washington is no Leadville, and the White Mountains are no Colorado Rockies.
