Hobie Alter, developer of the modern surfboard and later that wonderful catamaran that bears is his name, opened a shop in Dana Point back in 1958.

Hobie liked to say all that mattered to him was on the ocean side of the Pacific Coast Highway. He rarely ventured from it.

He was the Henry Ford of surfing.
