The Australian Defence Force will provide more than 1,000 personnel to help with the coronavirus response in Victoria.

Key points:

* The bulk of the ADF personnel will help with hotel quarantine

* Others will assist with logistics and testing

* The assistance was requested by Victoria following a spike in the number of new cases

The Federal Government received the request from Victoria overnight.

VIDEO - Melbourne residents wake to life in lockdown

On the first day dozens of suburbs in Melbourne have been given Stay at Home orders, there have been 77 cases recorded across the state.

Of the new cases, 13 are linked to known outbreaks, 37 detected through routine testing and 27 are under investigation.

None of Thursday’s cases are from hotel quarantine.

“Even though the Stay at Home orders apple to those restricted postcodes, all of us across Victoria need to consider if we need to see people in other households,” Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton said on Thursday.

“That will be the best mitigation against other postcodes being include.

It is the 16th consecutive day Victoria has had double-digit case numbers and there are almost 87 cumulative outbreaks in the state.

Of the new cases, many are from schools and Brett Sutton has confirmed there has been the first transmission between students and between teachers.

“There has been some student-to-student transmission and also teacher-to-teacher transmission at some schools,” Sutton said.

Twenty cases of the virus have also been traced back to a family from Melbourne’s north.

It comes on the day 36 suburbs across Melbourne have been shut down due to high community transmission.

There are only four reasons for those residents to leave their homes: food and supplies, exercise, care-giving and work or education.

Police are out patrolling the hot zone suburbs and are on Camp Road in Broadmeadows checking drivers’ addresses and reasons for travel in and out of the area.
