Bitcoin futures opened for trading on the Cboe Futures Exchange, LLC (CFE) on December 10, 2017. This is one of the biggest milestones for bitcoin since it emerged in the wake of the 2008-09 financial crisis.

It just so happened Dec 2017 was right at the top, of another speculative, yet hype-driven asset, before an 80% collapse.
But you're right - whatever winning products makes it out alive will be controlled by someone who already has the capital.
