The point you made about the trading at the open being lopsided to the buy side is the key. In fact, most of the day's volume can occur in the first 30 minutes. Sometimes it really doesn't take much, measured in money terms, at least, for a front loader or group of front loaders to buy shares with very little money while they watch traders jump in to bid prices even higher.
Frontloaded. Probably a custodial play being formed. Even if there isn't one, they will make it up. Maybe in a weeks time or so. They used to wait weeks, perhaps so the frontload doesn't get spotted. But then back then, they would frontload stretched over time.
