When I was finishing med school and working on the balloon pump some of the more renowned doctors (none of whom I will name)...Not only smoked but took all kinds of medications Notably amphetamines which were not at that time considered Class A controlled substances...When I was at the BI...Drug reps use to come in and leave samples in the residents' lounge which included meth amphetamine spansules.

And Darvon compound was not considered a narcotic although it was an isomer of morphine which about half the population reacted to in a manner similar to an opioid...I would say more than half the surgical residents were taking it on a daily basis...Until the hospital locked up the drug because it was costing the hospital too much money..

There were a lot of surgeons that did smoke..And cardiac surgeons were one of the main groups..More a reflection of the stress and long hours..Doctors use to see patients and light up...But that was long ago and there are very doctors now that smoke and even fewer that take control drugs..
