All lawyers need to follow procedural norms that most cases have in common. For instance, they must ask for the judge to rule on summary judgement, separate trials and so on. If they didn’t request these norms then they are open to professional liability suits from their clients. Much of what we have seen and will see is this sort of stuff until trial. Also some things are asked to have the judge rule so they can build potential appealable issues down the road. They already know the answer the judge will give but they have to go through the steps.
