I used to take DaSquaw and DaSun to a beach resort at Sunny Isles, just north of Miami Beach, callt The Suez. Most of the clientele were Canuckistani or Euros (Frogs, Brits, Jerries) and it was just a cool place with a ton of character. We stayed there three or four times for a week each time.
Across Collins Ave (A-1A) and down about 2 blocks was Wolfie's Rascal House, a true Jewish deli/bakery and restaurant. We would always eat at Wolfie's a few times each trip. We all loved it - and the table pickles (two kinds) were always emptied ~OUTT by us and had to be refilled.
Wolfie (I forget his lassed name) opened another deli in Boca Raton that we tried - it was OK butt nott the same atmosphere as the Sunny Isles original.
Unfortunately, Wolfie died and his delis closed. The Suez was sold and demolished, a huge, tall condo building now occupies the beach frontage.
Two crippling losses for us and the other patrons of The Suez and Wolfies. The Suez had an on-site restaurant for lunch and dinner on the beach in the middle of the various pools and jacuzzi. It was great because you gott seated randomly with other guests, so we gott to mingle with a lott of Euros on holidaze - witch I think was good for DaSun when he was young - he played and swam with a bunch of kidds who were Euros and had different customs and langwitches than DaSun. I enjoyed hangin' in one of the adult pools tawking to the Euros (and, yes, even some of the Canucks - as I speak fishing and ice hockey as second langwitches).
So much of the great historical places of the Miami area have been lost to the soulless, endless condo towers.
I read about Grossingers and viewed a photo essay on the abandoned remnants of it (I like videos and photo explorations of abandoned buildings, axespeshully industrial plants). It looks like it was a very cool place. Another loss that it closed. Even with the advent of AC, I would have expected that it would have had enough panache and character that folks would have kept on going there.
The Suez from the beach - most of it is ~OUTT of frame to the right - on the right you can see one of the bay windows of the on-site resort restaurant - further right ~OUTT of frame were two more wings of two-story rooms and the main building and lobby in the background (fronting on Collins Ave) and the pools and jacuzzi
