Small Caps Lag in Today’s Recovery
As I write the major averages are slowly gaining, but the Russell 2000 is lagging the large caps by roughly 1%.
The Russell 2000 is the index that measures 2,000 of the largest small-cap companies currently trading on a major exchange. Because small caps tend to be more volatile, they tend to offer quicker, bigger gains, but also drop a lot faster when the market turns sour.
Which is why yesterday's action, which saw the Russell only lose 2.94% versus the Nasdaq’s 3.5% loss, is a bit counterintuitive. As is the fact that through Tuesday, the Russell’s gains are also lagging…
