One could well argue that the issue was the EU's price fixing on interest rates that was unsustainable. The UK just was blasted by having a separate currency, thus being a trading play. Had the EU rates been allowed to properly float (or at least be reality based), this would never have happened.
I have a lot of issues with "corporatism". And certainly I agree that capitalism can be taken too far. But still it has proven to be a solid basis for a starting point.
