That needs to change. Bring back the unions. White collar workers need them too. People who work shouldn't be treated like slaves.
And people work better and more efficiently if they're not driven to perform for ten hours or more a day. Nobody does his or her best for more than about six hours, tops. Sure, there're deadlines that require everyone to work together, and overdo it, for short periods. That's reasonable, as long as they get comp time.
Work your people too hard, and you'll get poor performance and all kinds of inefficiencies you may not discover for quite awhile.
