LGL,
Thank you for the terrific link. Informative and in line with where our management has already been. That’s great news as always.
Couple of examples jumped right out at me for possible research connections of the sleep correlation to brain and body health, which we are already addressing in the studies, thankfully.
Lack of sleep, not other causes, could be responsible for:
1. My brother is a Pgh city paramedic. Along with firefighters and police (civil service public safety workers) almost ALWAYS work short handed and take overtime for the extra pay. Not unusual for most to work 16 hr days. They live on coffee and donuts too and must answer the alarm when a high stress call comes in - adrenaline. A surprisingly high number of these men and women die in their 40’s and 50’s of sudden massive heart attacks. Mostly, this has been attributed to stress and diet along with lifting heavy equipment etc (maybe ask our poster “fireman”, but he stays extremely fit in his DEMANDING job - hats off!).
Perhaps they will address this factor anew in light of the sleep data? I say prayers for my brother (in his late 50’s) and the crews all the time. Thanks, on a personal level - I will be forwarding this to Pittsburgh Public Safety Admin and personnel.
2. Air travel and “jet lag”. It’s fairly common for people who fly to experience cold and flu symptoms briefly after reaching destination either way. Could this be accounted for by the time difference in long flights weakening the immune system? Most people say recirculated air, however, doesn’t happen as often on buses and car rides, and so forth - maybe in planes more because of the greater time difference owing to speed not cabin?
“Most modern aircraft recycle about 50 percent of cabin air, with the remaining 50 percent being fresh, outside air. ... Partly to account for cigarette smoke, older systems actually used 100 percent fresh air, compressed, humidified and cooled by the engines in a process that consumed significant energy.Mar 25, 2012” Google
3. New moms and postpartum depression? Could be hormones, but, the lack of sleep part speaks for itself (we have triplets...).
4. Ever wake up in the middle of the night from a sound sleep with the answer to a problem that just suddenly “popped” into your subconscious? One which eluded you when awake? Happens to me frequently. I keep paper and pen, or smartphone now, by the bed (sadly very little light and too lazy to grab glasses...) I’ve read anecdotes about thinkers/inventors in the past who had revelations come to them in the form of solutions to difficult projects they were working on, as dreams. Was reminded of this when I saw the sleep spindles which increase the thought activity.
Very interesting and exciting topic which I am glad we are aware of and pursuing aggressively.
Thank you for this video - it will be going to a lot of recipients! Lol. Valuable stuff!
