You are missing something. China's economy has been strong only because of trade imbalance and stealing our technology. Even at that, they are currently economically weak with GDP dropping from decades of 10-12% to around six percent.
China needs more growth than that to fuel its job creation. They need to create about 80,000 new jobs per week to cover those entering the job market. They can't do that in a real trade war -- as opposed to the one-sided trade war they have enjoyed the past 25 years -- if we slow their imports and move factories to other developing countries.
Even the Red Army does not want to face 300 million angry young people on the streets.
