Exactly right. Decades of compounded ignorance and fallacy will need to be somehow rationalized and mitigated in the process. IMO, there are some things it is NOT OK to be wrong about, never mind for decades. The denial will be massive and that is why the proof must be undeniably strong. But, we get beyond that phase.
