Buying back shares either to keep as treasury stock or retire, does not result in any loss at all. The repurchase of of shares (as treasury stock or retire) is treated as a surplus transaction. What the effect is, reduces cash, and reduces equity (surplus)and the outstanding shares. No paper loss what so ever.
Now that the answer was changed due to my post correcting about a statement that claims that a paper loss will occur on a buyback , 2 billion is nothing???? Two billion in cash is not only something, but just about impossible!! By the way at current price it would be $2.4 Billion!!
