That is the danger of a black swan event. Given the percentages, from the short perspective, a large buyout without any warning would be a black swan event.
I'm not a short player so I haven't paid attention to all of the techniques available to them to manage risk. Several posters have said that buying calls is one way to hedge that risk. I'd bet there are others that I am unaware of.
