About Japan....

My father was a Lt Colonel in the !!th Airborne division which was MacArthur's unit...After the Japanese sign the surrender in 1945..WW11 ended for most soldiers however The 11th remained in Japan...and within 6 months of the surrender they shipped the families over...Actually my father being on MacArthur's staff was the acting governor of the island of Hokkaido. I was 4 years old...We lived in what was a Shogun palace outside the city of Hokkadate which was a small fishing village..

You can not even imagine what Japan was like at that point in time...No work, no money...as far as the notion that invading the main island would cost a million lives...That is ridiculous...There was less than ten trucks and a hundred gallons of gas in the whole country and there were not enough bullets to have a turkey shoot...

My family had 8 servants, a cook and a chauffeur. My brother and I had our own personal servant who slept in our room...Her name was Saidee.

We later moved to Sapporo where we lived on a military base..That was no where near as elegant..My father ended up catching polio and died at age 32 in Honshu...We then returned to the USA. All told I lived in Japan for two years.
